Study after study shows the significance of chiropractic care as it relates to eliminating acid reflux.
If you suffer from acid reflux, you’re not alone. An estimated 50 million people in the United States live with acid reflux, or GERD. Thousands in the Seattle area alone are coping with the disease.
Medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, are the most common treatment for GERD. Many patients also watch their diets; avoiding spicy foods and caffeinated beverages as much as possible. Some also find relief by elevating the head of their bed to prohibit acid from flowing into the esophagus.
But none of those solutions addresses the root cause of GERD – the weakening of your esophageal sphincter, which allows acid or bile to back up into the esophagus. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned in 2010 that some medications prescribed for GERD, such as proton pump inhibitors, carry an increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine.
A pre-experimental study involved 10 GERD patients sent for chiropractic treatment by a gastroenterologist surgeon. Through endoscopic exams, researchers verified an improvement of “58 percent of esophagitis degree caused by GERD.” See study here.
Why? A study in Neurogastroenterology & Motility magazine provides a clue. It demonstrated that GERD impacts spinal nerves. And chiropractors are experts on the spine. They know that spinal misalignments put pressure on the delicate nerves flowing through the spine and interrupt the nerves’ ability to communicate with your limbs and organs. Like a hose with a kink in it, your body can’t function at its peak.
And because the nervous system is responsible for every function of the body, when that nerve activity is inhibited, it can lead to disturbances in your stomach function, giving rise to GERD.
